I have found an entry for a William Braddon who was convicted in the Devon Assizes Court on the 19 July 1845 & sentenced to Fifteen Years. He was transported to Van Dieman's Land, Australia on the vessel, Pestonjee Bomanjee. Voyage date: 6 Sep 1845.He was recommended for a conditional pardon on 4 Jan 1855.What I was hoping to find out was what crime he committed, how old he was, and any family details? If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.
Margaret

Walter Braddon

I thought I ought to try out this new blog by welcoming you to it and posing the first question. Has anyone come across the birth of Walter Braddon either c 1844 in Totnes (as stated in the 1851 and 1881 censuses), c 1845 in Ashburton (1861 census) or c 1845 in Torquay (1891 census), all in Devon? He does not appear in the GRO indexes. On both his marriage certificates, he stated that his father was William Braddon, farmer.

He certainly did not have an easy life, as at age 7 he was an inmate of the Totnes Workhouse, but he overcame his difficulties as 10 years later he was a printer's apprentice in Torquay and then in adulthood was a compositor with a family in London. He died in 1900.

David Barton.
